When you think of Forrest Gump, it’s almost impossible not to hear his voice in your head—that slow, Southern drawl that made Tom Hanks’ performance so iconic.

But that voice wasn’t just a creative choice. It was inspired by Michael Connor Humphreys, the young actor who played Forrest as a child. Tom Hanks was so taken by Michael’s natural accent and mannerisms that he decided to build his entire performance around them.

To prepare for the role, Hanks spent time with Michael, recording their conversations to study the way he talked. One memorable moment came when young Michael told Tom about his dad’s unusual job: “My dad makes grease,” he said, explaining—without skipping a beat—that it’s used in “lipstick and motor oil.”

That blend of innocence and sincerity stuck with Tom. From the way Forrest spoke, to how he held his hands or turned his head—much of it came directly from watching Michael.

In Hanks’ own words, “Everything that came out of Forrest was based on him.”

It’s a reminder that sometimes the most iconic performances start with simply observing someone being themselves.
