The Runespan update was made possible because attendees of RuneFest 2011 "You Be the Judge" session chose this out of 5 potential updates. In my opinion, Runecrafting has been in need of an update for years, so I welcome this update.

Speak to Wizard Finix in the Wizards' Tower, just outside of the portal to the Runecrafting guild to learn about the Runespan as well as view the rewards shop.

The Basics:
• There are three levels to the Runespan. Everyone can reach the first level and a small part of the second, but you must be a member for full access to the second and third levels.
• Floating essence gets you started by providing the initial essence required to siphon from nodes and creatures.
• Runic creatures can be siphoned to create runes and use Rune essence. When the creature dies, you're rewarded with more Rune essence. You can also chip away at these creatures to gain Rune essence, although currently, this isn't really needed at all.
• Runic energy nodes provide more experience than the creatures, but spawn somewhat randomly. They expire after a certain amount of siphons, successful or not.
• Bridging points allow travel between islands. They always cost 1 of each rune required. The required runes are shown on the point itself.
• Wizards can be found on each level, 4 with blue robes and 1 with yellow robes. The blue robed wizards will help you track down the yellow robed wizard. The yellow wizard will reward you with experience if you give him the type of runes he needs. All wizards will teleport you back to the entrance.
• Runespheres appear every few hours. You can do one of these per day (similar to the shooting star D&D) and they stay around for an hour, unless the center is found first. You will gather rune dust for siphoning. You can use this dust on the center for 10 Runecrafting Xp per dust.

So far it seems to be ~60k Xp/Hr, which is pretty good. This activity is semi-afkable as well, so it makes it a good multi-tasking activity. It's also great to do with groups where you can communicate which islands have which nodes, etc. I love the graphics and animations, and was surprised at just how little lag there is with the entire update.

It should be noted that you can earn Shattered Heart strange rocks here as well as Squeal of Fortune free spin tickets.

Random Updates:
• Trimmed completionist cape wearers will now need to attain the highest Esteem rank possible from training in the Runespan (rank 1) in order to wear their cape.
• Over the next week, you'll find lily of the valley growing across the grassy areas of RuneScape.
• Point gain in the Flash Powder Factory was slightly lower than intended, and has now been increased by approximately 10%.
