There is often something significant about the birth of protagonists or heroes in stories, myths, and legends. We see them struggle with their existence and the grand goals they set to find their life’s worth, Guts is no different. As a matter of a fact, his birth bears striking similarities to another hero in a story written over 400 years ago.
INTRO
Guts, the man who defies the world of Berserk, was born to a dead woman hanging from a tree. Though he was found moments later and saved by Shisu Gambino’s woman, this act of kindness does not change the fact that Guts was born an orphan and this could have great implications for his destiny. To see a possibility of the outcome of Guts’ destiny, we will need to discuss Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”.
Macbeth chronicles the rise and fall of the once noble hero, Macbeth. He is akin to Griffith in many ways. Both men were brave generals in the eyes of their soldiers and the kings they served; they both received a prophecy from enchantresses that one day they would sit on the throne. Like Griffith, Macbeth became obsessed with the notion of being a ruler, and, owing to their lack of a moral compasses, both men took the throne for themselves. These men went on to betray their best friends and allies for their own selfish intentions. So how does the story of Macbeth tie into the birth of Guts?
In Macbeth, when his fortune was read by the three witches they had something interesting to tell him. The witches’ final prophecy was that Macbeth would die by the hand of a man who was "not born of woman." It was later revealed, in the story of Macbeth, that the character Macduff was born by cesarean birth, which indicated that he was cut from his mother’s dead body - this completed the prophecy. In our opinion, just like Macduff, Guts’ tragic entry into the world made him unique and shaped him into an indomitable warrior.
The significance of Guts’ birth can be seen with the first interaction that took place between him and the Skull Knight. In their first meeting, the Skull Knight mentions that Guts was born from a dead corpse and went on to call him “the struggler”. This name stuck with Guts throughout the story and in a sense, gives readers a small, but very important clue into the importance of Guts’ character in the series. Like Macduff, Guts had to flee the mainland and seek assistance. Will the prophesy the witches delivered to MacDuff be an indicator of the possible outcome of Berserk? The similarities between MacDuff and Guts’ births and Griffith and Macbeth’s ascension to power are unmistakable. Did Miura also draw inspiration from Shakespeare’s tale of Macbeth? If he did, then Berserk fans can expect to see the oppressed and disenfranchised characters avenged and Guts as the hero.
