Stranded in the middle of nowhere, Lisa seeks out help in an isolated old house. As she searches the house, Lisa soon discovers the house holds a secret.
The Society is a short third person horror game with a focus on building a mystery and atmosphere.
Overall the Society is an… okay game. If not exceptionally well put together, it’s certainly functional and tells a story, which is my new baseline for what makes a game “technically complete” after having seen some of the stuff that tries to get on Steam. This game is not on Steam, and it’s not trying to market itself as a $15 game, The Society is on itch.io, a website set up specifically for people who have spent time working on a personal project and want to share it with other people. It definitely comes across as a personal project, as all of the assets appear pretty much as-bought from the Unity Store. I can’t say for certain since I have not checked the store for these assets, but I have seen those aliens (experiments) before, and the repeating rooms/textures are a pretty good sign that nothing has been changed.
That’s all well and good, but the way the game progresses isn’t incredibly designed or written either. As I mentioned before, there is nothing at the beginning of the game to get us involved in what is happening in this game or give us any context. This bit is a very fine balance, but is so crucial to whether people will want to play the rest of the game. Immediately after starting the player is investigating and combining things to progress to new rooms, even though the only notes available at first don’t really point toward anything particularly dangerous happening at the house. It’s also not clear when we go from “looking for help with our car” to “there are experiments going on in this house, I better check them out”. There’s no real sense of development, even though the notes do a pretty good job of slowly revealing more information, because the character only speaks a couple of times throughout the game. Through all of the horrible writing and even worse voice acting of Resident Evil, you could at least tell that the characters were going through something. All the way to the ending of The Society it’s hard to tell what the main character is feeling.
The ending is actually one of the things I like. A lot of games/movies have the main character miraculously surviving somehow but *spoilers* the main character here dies. You actually get to choose how they die, but it’s not a huge difference either way. Not every movie has to have a happy ending, but I didn’t really get a sense of closure here and I think it ties back into the way the character actively does not develop. It simply feels like something that happened rather than the end of a story.
The Society is a complete experience, and definitely does what it needs to do to get its point across. Unfortunately it falls short of making me feel invested in what is happening, which is the most important part of narrative games.
