「The Sonic Theorist: How Does Chaos Control Work?」

The fateful encounter between Sonic and Shadow opened our eyes to the deep chasm of applications for the Chaos Emeralds, beyond a mere source of power.
Moreover, it introduced the staple technique of the ancient gemstones, "Chaos Control" - gifting the user with mastery over the fabric of time and space. The skill served as the foundation for Sonic Adventure 2's dark new hedgehog, and made subsequent appearances in Heroes, Shadow, '06, and many more titles as a minor story element.
But to this day, I've always wondered *how* Chaos Control works.. is there a means to break-down EVERY factor of the process from start to finish, and offer a real-life explanation?
