Before 2010, India didn’t have a unique currency symbol — only 'Rs.' was used.
But then came the ₹ symbol — a blend of English 'R' and Devanagari 'र'.
In 2009, the Indian government held a national design contest. Out of 3000+ entries, D. Udaya Kumar's design was chosen!
He was a PhD student at IIT Bombay then — today he’s the Head of Design at IIT Guwahati.
With this, the Indian Rupee joined global currencies like $ Dollar, € Euro, ¥ Yen, £ Pound — all with unique symbols.
You can type it easily in Word: just type 20B9, then press Alt + X = ₹
💡 Bonus Fact: A symbol for Paise was also designed, but never used — because RBI had stopped minting those coins!
