In 1963, the French Ministry of Defense initiated research into variable-geometry wings in response to the USAF’s recent adoption of the F-111 Aardvark. Soon enough, the British government spearheaded its own research into the matters in 1965 and offered a partnership with France to jointly develop the AVFG program. However, the partnership fell apart in 1967, with France pulling away from the program, citing development costs.

Dassault Aviation then decided to develop its own take on the program, which culminated in the Mirage G, essentially a Mirage F2 fitted with a variable geometry wing. However, as the design matured, it became clear that the Mirage G was becoming too big, and too expensive. So, they decided to go with their secondary, smaller project which later became the Mirage 2000. As for the British? They took their AVFG design and partnered up with Italy and West Germany to jointly develop the Panavia Tornado.
