The Soviet Union almost had its own Valkyrie bomber, and its intended mission was to hunt down the SR-71 Blackbird. In December 1962, a competition was announced to design an aircraft fast enough to intercept the XB-70 Valkyrie and Lockheed A-11, while also flexible enough to fulfill bomber and strategic reconnaissance roles. Three companies participated, but Sukhoi’s design was selected due to its ambitious top speed of Mach 3.

It featured four Kolesov RD-36 turbojet engines and a droop snoot system similar to that found on the Concorde airliner, to assist with take-off and landing visibility. Because the expected take-off weight of the T-4 was to be above 100 tonnes, it received the nickname “Sotka,” meaning, “one hundred.” However, due to budgetary concerns, the Soviet High Command had to shut down the T-4 project in order to fulfill the large order of Mikoyan MiG-23 airframes, which means...
