“Public Enemies” is a great look at the true story of notorious bank robber John Dillinger. But of course, since it’s a feature film and not a documentary, we know that not everything that takes place has a historical basis. It can be difficult to determine fact vs. fiction in films like these, but we’ll reveal what was changed, added, or embellished for the movie version. FBI Special Agent Melvin Purvis had a very different relationship with this criminal than we ended up seeing, but Christian Bale got some interesting insight into his character. Marion Cotillard was so intent on getting the accent of Billie Frechetta just right that she refused to speak in her native tongue during the filming process. Johnny Depp found a surprising number of connections between himself and his character, and had personal feelings about this particular outlaw. Originally, this was going to be an HBO miniseries but it was eventually developed into a feature film. We’ll talk about how it ended up getting made, and what surprising detail was actually toned down because director Michael Mann worried it would be too unbelievable to keep in the script.
