Doom is one of the most widely ported video games in the first-person shooter genre. Starting with the original MS-DOS PC version (released as shareware on December 10, 1993), it has been released officially for a number of computer operating systems, video game consoles, handheld game consoles, and other devices. Some of the ports are replications of the MS-DOS version, while others differ considerably, including modifications to the level designs and monsters, with some ports offering content not included in the original MS-DOS version.

After Doom's source code was released to the public on December 23, 1997, several source ports were created by fans to allow the original PC version to run on modern operating systems.

On April 30, 1995, an upgraded version of the game, The Ultimate Doom, was released, which contained an additional fourth episode, "Thy Flesh Consumed", in addition to the original three episodes.

KNEE-DEEP IN THE DEAD:
Knee-Deep in the Dead is the first episode in Doom/Ultimate Doom, and the only episode in the shareware version. The episode takes place in the UAC installations on Phobos, one of the moons of Mars.

Designed mainly by John Romero, the levels have a unique graphical style characterized by extensive use of STAR textures, large amounts of highly saturated brown and green in general, and a misty, mountainous skyline.

Because of Episode 1's singular inclusion in the Doom shareware version, the Episode 1 style levels have become one of the most popular and easily recognizable Doom design themes. Fan-made levels utilizing exclusively Episode 1 textures, and often emulating Episode 1's play style, are commonly referred to as techbase levels.

E1M6: Central Processing is the sixth map of Knee-Deep in the Dead in Doom. It was designed by John Romero and uses the music track "On The Hunt". The par time is 3:00.
It is well known for its traps, which when triggered opens up rooms of monsters and often simultaneously shuts the escape doorway. In co-op mode, it is possible to have your buddy stand in the doorway, which will prevent the triggered door from closing, thereby providing an exit from having to fight numerous enemies in close quarters.
On the Ultra-Violence or Nightmare skill levels this map has 177 enemies--the most out of all Doom (and Ultimate Doom) levels.
