The Ultimate Doom - Forsaken Compound - E1M9: Cybertemple (Ultra-Violence 100%)
Hey everyone, welcome back to another round of Doomage. The thing on the menu today is a new Ultimate Doom wad by ivymagnapinna called Forsaken Compound. This wad is an Episode 1 replacement intended for limit-removing ports, and is the author's first significant release. Forsaken Compound features a new palette, the incorporation of PSX/Doom 64 sounds, a pervasive sinister atmosphere, and a very skilful mix of horrorish and slaughter scenarios. As the text file notes, the environment is "a tech complex integrating itself into Hell. There's blood in the pipes, flesh in the machinery, and the walls won't take their eyes off you". Sounds great, so let's continue our exploration!

Additional notes
---------------------------
The implementation of slaughter in Ultimate Doom is a notoriously difficult task, with the main conceptual challenges being the skeletal monster roster and the delicate balancing act between sheer carnage and partially salvaging UD's identity as a more meticulous and slower game than its successors. 'Cybertemple', however, is one instance where it definitely works - it might not have the sense of scale and attention to detail that you'd see in a punishing Ribbiks wad, but in its simplicity and relatively easy difficulty, it's almost as fun as any of its numerous, more sophisticated, and well-known siblings. In fact, I'd say that this map would make a good first candidate for "slaughter virgins" to start dipping their toes into the subgenre. Two of my favorite moments are the combat puzzle of the opener, where you must patiently wait for the cyber to begin the hostilities in order to reach the BFG; and the thick hordes that you must eliminate while walking on ledges in the blue skull key section. The rest is just as good though, and overall it's an exuberantly bloody affair that is damn satisfying.
