The Ultimate Doom - Forsaken Compound - E1M4: Dead Man's Station (Ultra-Violence 100%)
Hey everyone, welcome back to another round of Doomage. The thing on the menu today is a new Ultimate Doom wad by ivymagnapinna called Forsaken Compound. This wad is an Episode 1 replacement intended for limit-removing ports, and is the author's first significant release. Forsaken Compound features a new palette, the incorporation of PSX/Doom 64 sounds, a pervasive sinister atmosphere, and a very skilful mix of horrorish and slaughter scenarios. As the text file notes, the environment is "a tech complex integrating itself into Hell. There's blood in the pipes, flesh in the machinery, and the walls won't take their eyes off you". Sounds great, so let's continue our exploration!

Additional notes
---------------------------
Ah, the sweet hellish outdoors. This imposing outpost and its grounds are quite a cool exercise in vertical progression, their exploration driven by Viscra Maelstrom's excellent, looming metallic riffage. The perimeter is very lightly defended and offers multiple entry points into the base itself, where your movement will obviously become more constrained as the action intensifies. The semi-slaughterish splatter in the green goo which leads you to the red keycard is an exciting little sequence, made even more exciting by rad suit time pressure. Like I implied in E1M2, Ivy has a knack for obscure secrets, and 'Dead Man's Station' is a great example of that. Fortunately, the time and effort spent in hunting them down offers access to genuinely game-changing goodies that some might even call overkill. Case(s) in point - three of the four secrets here offer a BFG, a supercharge, AND a green ball, best saved for the climactic fight in the bloody pool where you get the yellow skull key. Personally I don't mind but I can see how the argument makes sense, especially since it's an ambush that's 100% conquerable with the plasma gun alone and without invulnerability. Another fine entry.
