Basics

What they do: Pay 1 life, sacrifice fetchland → search for specific land type → put on battlefield → shuffle
Key point: Search for land types, not just basic lands

Basic Land Types

Plains ({W})
Island ({U})
Swamp ({B})
Mountain ({R})
Forest ({G})

Fetchland Options

Enemy Fetchlands: Marsh Flats (W/B), Scalding Tarn (U/R), Verdant Catacombs (B/G), Arid Mesa (W/R), Misty Rainforest (U/G)
Allied Fetchlands: Flooded Strand (W/U), Polluted Delta (U/B), Bloodstained Mire (B/R), Wooded Foothills (R/G), Windswept Heath (G/W)

What You Can Fetch

Basic Lands: Any basic with matching type
Shock Lands: Dual-typed lands that cost 2 life to enter untapped
Original Dual Lands: Reserve List lands with two basic types, no drawbacks
Triomes: Three basic land types, enter tapped, can be cycled
Many others: Any land with a basic land type in its type line

Why Use Fetchlands

Deck thinning
Perfect color fixing
Double landfall triggers
Graveyard synergies
Shuffle effects

Drawbacks

Life loss
High cost ($$)
Can run out of targets
Some fetched lands enter tapped

They’re called “Shock lands” because the card Shock deals 2 damage much like the lands do in order to put them in play untapped.
