The animals are iconic characters from the 2D Metroid games. They teach Samus new techniques in Super Metroid and it is possible to rescue them during the escape sequence at the end of the game. This is the canonical event, because they reappear in Metroid Fusion. How did these animals escape? Here I suggest a couple of theories.
