The US attempts to set a UN deadline for war

The US together with Spain and the UK brought a draft resolution to the UN security council that would have seen Saddam Hussein fully disarm and cooperate with UN inspectors by the 17th of March 2003 or face a UN backed invasion.

In the days to come the Bush regime would try, very hard, to convince the members of Security Council that war with Iraq was necessary…

But France, who had already said it would not back this idea weeks early, almost immediately vowed to Veto the resolution if it was brought to a vote and the US also failed to secure the support of China and Russia, the other permanent members on the council.

The result was that a deadline, only 10 days away, was out in the open and the US was clearly undaunted by the lack of support.
