The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, developed and published by The Astronauts, game developers based in Poland, is a single player open world Adventure and Horror game. Incredibly immersive mystery adventure with a haunting but unobtrusive score and atmospheric environmental sounds that enhance the experience. The game was inspired by the Ambrose Bierce horror story "The Incident at Owl Creek Bridge".

As Paul Prospero, a detective with psychic abilities, you continue to search Red Creek Valley for clues or evidence about the disappearance of Ethan Carter, the young teenage boy who was writing you.

You leave the lake shore where you found the train engine crank. Climbing back up from the shore you see several locked boxcar sitting on the tracks. Just past the boxcars you find a train platform but neither waiting passengers nor clues. On the hillside almost hidden in the woods, you discover what appears to be a railway semaphore but it would be invisible from the tracks. Interacting is possible but produces no results or psychic perceptions

Progress remains slow using only your feet and visual observations to uncover game mechanics interacting with the environment. This session no results from your powers of observation and nopsychic perceptions.

Original development for Ethan Carter used the Unreal 3 Engine coupled with photogrammetry, realistic 3D environmental mapping, that produced a highly detailed, natural-feeling, immersive world. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter released for Windows September 26, 2014.

The Astronauts team then ported the game using the 64-bit Unreal 4 Engine. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux is fully remastered with greater detail and smoother story flow. The Redux version released for PS4 July 15, 2015; Redux Windows September 12, 2015; Redux XBox One January 19, 2018; and Redux Nintendo Switch August 15, 2019.
