The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, developed and published by The Astronauts, game developers based in Poland, is a single player open world Adventure/Horror game. Incredibly immersive mystery adventure with a haunting but unobtrusive score and atmospheric environmental sounds that enhance the adventure. The game was inspired by the Ambrose Bierce horror story "The Incident at Owl Creek Bridge".
You are Paul Prospero, a detective with certain psychic abilities. In this episode you gingerly cross the apparently abandoned Red Creek Valley railroad bridge, obviously in disrepair. You need to continue your investigation of the disappearance of Ethan Carter, a young teenage boy who has been corresponding with you.
Proceeding cautiously you uncover more game mechanics through interacting with the environment.
Original development for Ethan Carter used the Unreal 3 Engine coupled with photogrammetry, realistic 3D environmental mapping, which produced a highly detailed, natural-feeling world that is totally immersive. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Windows release September 26, 2014.
This version, 'Ethan Carter Redux' was ported to the Unreal 4 Engine -- fully remastered in 64-bit with greater detail and smoother story flow.
