I finally found this vod recently while organizing files. I remember telling people I had a sub-20 in this, so I'm glad I found it. Although, there's plenty of time to save, as usual. Madoola will have its big break in speedrunning one day.
This game was only released in Japan for the Famicom. It was developed by Sunsoft in 1986. The objective of the game is to clear 16 stages. To clear a stage, you must first locate the boss room, defeat the boss and collect its orb, and then locate the exit door. You can collect weapons and spells, upgrade them, as well as increase your maximum HP and MP.
The most useful items are the boots, flame sword, and the flash spell. Each upgrade of the boots increases movement speed, jump height, and improves overall control. The flame sword simply deals solid damage and is good for clearing mobs and damaging bosses. The flash spell deals damage over a short period of time to the entire screen, but enables a damage glitch: On the final use of a flash (500 MP) when you do not have the MP to cast it again, you will automatically switch to the sword weapon. If you immediately start attacking with the sword while the flash animation is still occurring, massive damage will be dealt to all enemies on screen, and will instantly kill any boss.
Furthermore, on stage 16, you must collect the "Wing of Madoola" item, which lets you fly at the cost of 1000 MP per cast, and use it twice to clear the stage. Since you begin the game with 1000 MP, you must reach the end with at least 2000 to be able to clear the game. It's quite easy to softlock, both in speedruns and in casual playthroughs!
There are several annoying fights, such as the "50 frogs" encounter in stage 10, as well as the general annoying random nature of enemy spawns. Since you generally have to preserve your health throughout the entire game, some bad RNG with high-damage enemies can easily kill a run.
