According to the featurette, the only way to achieve a true surround sound mix for the film, was to use orchestral angles wherever they could. Orchestral angles are from microphones that were placed in the room during the recording of the soundtrack, these alternate recordings were never used until the 5.1 remix that was made in the 1990's.
