It took me a while to put two and two together concerning Fletcher Hanks.
I first stumbled upon his work in an old Golden Age Marvel Masterworks, and found it quite amusing how it seemed so amateurish yet unique at the same time. The art was terrible, but the story was OUT THERE. Pretty sure it was the saurian riding girls of Venus I stumbled upon.
Eventually I dig figure out who he was, and quickly grabbed these books. While a lot of golden age material from the 40s doesn't hold up to modern sensibilities, the Fletcher Hanks stuff is quite unique. His characters seem to gleefully dish out as much punishment as the villains tend to cause. The consequences are often outlandish and over the top, much like the bulk of the dialogue.
And the art... the ART! Sometimes there are flashes of quality draftsmanship, and other times it looks like Hanks couldn't be bothered to care. It's inconsistent to say the least. Sometimes faces look traced or copied. Sometimes poses seem to get reused. When he lets loose though...
If you dig this kind of stuff, absolutely hunt down a copy!
