This technology involves electronic devices that establish direct communication between the human brain and external interfaces. BMI has transformative potential across a range of applications. It can significantly improve treatments for conditions like epilepsy, depression, and paralysis, and aid those with movement impairments. Furthermore, it can facilitate advanced neuroprosthetics, provide enhanced sensory inputs, and even allow for direct brain-to-brain communication. Moreover, it can streamline communication among individuals with identical implants and computer setups. Despite these promising applications, BMI also presents complex ethical considerations that need careful examination, such as potential influence on mental states, blurred boundaries between the biological and digital worlds, challenges to personal identity, freedom of thought, and the maintenance of cognitive liberty, mental integrity, and psychological continuity. Privacy, in particular, is of utmost importance due to the enhanced ability to decode mental states.
