The X Files is a point and click FMV adventure game written and directed by series creator Chris Carter and filmed on location across Seattle, Washington designed and published by 20th Century Fox Interactive and Hyperbole Studios and released to PC, Mac and PS1 in 1998. The games' filming lasted for 4 years and cost over 6 million dollars

The game takes place during the 3rd season of the TV series and presents a whole new story where FBI Agents Fox William Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Katherine Scully (Gillian Anderson) vanish while investigating a case in Everett County, Washington..

Assistant Director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) and Agent Armistead Shanks (Sean Griffin) assign you, Agent Craig Willmore (the late Jordan Lee Williams) to the case which has you quickly realizing there is more to this standard missing person's case than meets the eyes as you slowly delve further and further into the paranormal..

The game, as stated was filmed on location, as such none of the game resorted to "blue screen" or "green screen" technology.. As an example.. The NSA base near the end of the game was actually filmed at a former U.S. Naval Base at Sand Point, Washington.. The script for the game was over 1,748 pages long and the reason for David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson's minor roles in the game were due to the fact that they were also filming the 1st X Files movie at the time this game was being produced..

All in all this game is considered to be a very popular and highly commercial success having topped over 1 million copies sold at launch.
