(Theory) Why Chief/Arbiter Worked & Chief/Locke Did Not/ 2024
My Theory (But Also Review) On "Why The Master Chief/Arbiter Storyline WORKED & The Master Chief/Agent Locke Storyline DIDN'T".....
In Halo 2 We're Introduced To The Elite Who Becomes The Arbiter. Immediately We're Fed Emotions Creating Sympathy For Him. A High Ranking Covenant Commander Who Was Court Martialed & Charged With Treason & Then Publicly Shamed All Cause He Couldn't Stop Chief From Destroying The Ring In The First Game. Then Throughout The Game We See The Arbiter & His Fellow Comrades Giving & Risking Their Lives For A Belief They're Told Will Bring Them Salvation But Eventually They're Betrayed By Those They Swore To Protect, Essentially, In Halo 2, We Become Sympathetic Towards The Arbiter, His Situation & His Comrades & Understand Where They're Coming From & Why They Do What They Do. We Cheered When The Arbiter & The Humans Joined Forces At The End Of The Game To Stop Tartarus,
Essentially, Throughout Halo 2, We're Fed The Narrative That The Arbiter Is Just Misunderstood & He & His Elites Are Actually Not So Bad When You Get To Know Them, That The Arbiter Means Well, But He & His Elites Are Just Brainwashed By The The Prophets & This Mindset Creates A Sense Of Sympathy Towards The Arbiter & His Elites Which Leads To US Becoming Invested In Their Characters Which Ultimately Leads Us To Care, Understand & Reconize The Arbiter & The Elites, Not As Enemies, But As Allies, As Friends, & It Was From That Point That The Elites Are No Longer Seen As Enemies Trying To Eliminate Chief, But As Misunderstood Creatures Just Trying To Find Purpose & Salvation In A Darkened Existance.
And That's Why Chief/Arbiter Storyline WORKED.
But In Halo 5: Guardians, We're Introduced To Agent Locke & From The Beginning Of The Game, No, From The Beginning Of The Halo 5 Trailers & Marketing Campaign, We're Fed The Narrative That Agent Locke & Chief Are Enemies. Unlike The Arbiter Storyline, We're Not Really Given Any Reason To Have A Personal Attachment To Agent Locke. We're Not Given A Reason For His Actions Against The Master Chief Other Than He's Just Following Orders. We're Not Given Any Information As To Locke's Mindset In The Game Pertaining To, Does He Have Resentment Towards Chief For Some Reason, Is He Just Following Orders or Does He Legitimately Care About Chief & He's Trying To Save Chief From A Negative Outcome With New Cortana, We Just Don't Know, & Because We Don't Know Locke's Mindset & Emotions, We're Just Left With The Narrative That Locke's Just An Emotionless Cyborg Who's Only Following Orders. We Don't Have Any Reason To Become Sympathetic or Emotional Towards Locke Like We Did Arbiter & Therefore We Can't Really Get Invested Emotionally In Locke or His Comrades, & Even When Agent Locke Allies Himself With & Saves Master Chief, We Find Ourselves Constantly Doubting Him & His Team's Motive Cause We Just Witnessed Locke & Chief Fight & Locke Being Treated As Chief's Adversary & Now He's Trying To Help Chief, A 180 Stance Switch Like That Would Have Anyone Questioning That Person's Motives In The Real World Much Less A Video Game.
So Because We're Fed The Narrative From The Halo 5 Trailers, The Marketing Campaign & The First Half Of The Game That Agent Locke Is Master Chief's Adversary & The Two Are Enemies & Master Chief Being The Beloved Face Of Halo (One Of Then Anyways) & Anyone Who Stands Against Chief Is Automatically The Villian In The Halo Community's Eyes & We're Never Really Given A Reason To Get Emotionally Invested In Locke or His Team, You Can See Why The Master Chief/Agent Locke Storyline DIDN'T Work.
So Now You See Why The Master Chief/Arbiter Storyline WORKED & The Master Chief/Agent Locke Storyline DIDN'T.
