Is Unbreakable Patches the A Hole?

I think he gets a bum rap.

Probably the worst thing he does in DS3 is "borrow" Siegward's armor and even then, I have questions as to how exactly that went down. Did Siegward pass out on the road again and Patches stole his armor to teach him a lesson? It does seem he gives it back eventually because if you ignore his pleas for help and move on to killing Yhorm without him, he will move on to his next location and thank you for finishing his duty for him. And if Patches had him at a point where he could strip his armor, he could have just killed him if he had truly ill will.

But if you separate this Patches from the actions of the other games' Patches and put them in context of his environment, he's actually a pretty solid guy in this game.
And the Ashen One doesn't exactly give the best first impression by (from his POV) trying to beat him to the Cathedral's treasure.

It just seems like he's been burned in the past.
