19Adam's Peak, also known as Siri Pada, is a sacred mountain in Sri Lanka that attracts pilgrims of various faiths.
It is 2,243 meters high and located in the central highland region, between Ratnapura and Nuwara Eliya districts. The mountain is famous for the Sri Pada (Sinhala: ශ්රී පාද), a rock formation near the summit that resembles a human footprint. Buddhists believe it is the footprint of the Buddha, Hindus believe it is the footprint of Shiva, Christians believe it is the footprint of St. Thomas, and Muslims believe it is the footprint of Adam. The mountain is also known as Samanalakanda (Sinhala: සමනළ කන්ද), meaning "Butterfly Mountain", because of the large number of butterflies that migrate to the region every year. The mountain has a rich biodiversity and is part of the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, which is home to many endemic species of flora and fauna. The mountain also gives rise to three major rivers of Sri Lanka: the Kelani, the Walawe, and the Kalu.
The climb to the summit of Adam's Peak is a popular pilgrimage for Sri Lankans and tourists alike. The peak season is from December to May when the weather is dry and clear. There are several routes to reach the top, but the most common one is from Nallathanniya (Dalhousie), which has about 5,200 steps and takes about 3 to 4 hours. The climb is usually done at night so that the pilgrims can reach the peak before dawn and witness the spectacular sunrise. The sunrise also casts a triangular shadow of the mountain on the surrounding clouds, which is considered a mystical phenomenon. The view from the summit is breathtaking, as one can see the green hills, valleys, forests, and waterfalls of Sri Lanka. The pilgrims also pay their respects to the Sri Pada and ring the bell at the top, indicating that they have completed their journey.
