Three Years of "Let's Get On With It!"
289Seventy-five user-suggested clips arranged in chronological order to commemorate the three years I've been doing this hobby. During that time, I've uploaded over seven hundred hours of footage to my YouTube channel, and - factoring in all of my guest and co-commentary - there are over nine hundred hours of entertainment accessible through my playlists.
Three years ago, none of it existed. I had just introduced myself on the Bay 12 Games Curses subforum, sharing a screenshot LP of Liberal Crime Squad supplemented with videos uploaded to Dailymotion. Since then, I've expanded my hobby to cover a whole slew of games ranging from classic to modern, from strategy to action, from marvelous to horrendous. Fueled by positive interactivity and my natural charisma, I've carved out a niche for myself in the "Let's Play" subculture, becoming an entertainer in the process. Not something I thought I'd be doing with my life... but, well, you all have certainly enjoyed the free hours of pleasure.
The time I've spent on this hobby is unmeasurable. Learning how to record, learning how to encode, learning how my quirky personality alters itself to suit the microphone, recording videos that have been deleted, recording videos that never made it onto the channel, wrestling with inadequate hardware, wrestling with inadequate software, making improper encoding selections that ruin the footage, staring vapidly at the monitor while my system resources and bandwidth are occupied, reading all of the comments and personal messages I have received and replying to them as I see fit, reshaping my schedule and life to allow for the hours of time I spend trying to amuse others instead of myself, wondering why I didn't choose a more physically-intensive hobby that'd allow for long-term health benefits such as casual sex.
Every day I press the record button, I accept the bad of doing this hobby in exchange for the good. I don't regret my decision. Volunteering my time to others is something I've done for years. Just ask the children I've tutored, the people whose lives I've enriched with my existence. I often wrestle with self-loathing, with dark thoughts threatening to crush my spirit, but there's no person who can refute the good I have done. In a way, the time I spend helping others is validation for why I'm still alive, why I made an agreement with myself so long ago to eschew the route of suicide.
*bitter laugh* Still so damn melodramatic.
So long as I am able and willing, I will continue to pursue this hobby. Where that path will take me - take us - I cannot say. *shrug* Life's full of surprises, and I hope I live long enough to experience many more.
