Threes! for Windows 2048 ) [No Commentary Gameplay 3]
Threes is an indie puzzle video game by Sirvo, an independent development team consisting of game designer Asher Vollmer, illustrator Greg Wohlwend, and composer Jimmy Hinson. The game was released on February 6, 2014, for iOS devices and later ported to Android, Xbox One, and Windows Phone. In Threes, the player slides numbered tiles on a grid to combine addends and multiples of three. The game ends when there are no moves left on the grid and the tiles are counted for a final score.
Aesthetics
The game has a simply beautiful feel to it. It's filled with natural animations and calming music. There is also a lot of beauty in the raw fact that the player is adding numbers. Seeing numbers add up and double is something that is naturally pleasing to the player. There isn't tons of graphics and levels involved, but the attention to detail in some of the transitions, animations, and sound make the game feel very complete and natural. The aesthetics of this game make it very easy to find yourself playing for hours at a time.
Narrative
There isn't a strict narrative in the game. Instead, they focused on the puzzle aspect of adding numbers together. The goal of the game is to beat your own high scores and the high scores of others. When they were creating the game, their original prototype had the same number theme that the game contains today. During their development time, they played around with many different themes and narratives. Some included monsters, cards, etc. By the end, they realized that the numbers were the easiest to comprehend and the most playable.
Technology
The game was originally built and launched for iOS. Soon after, they released an Android version and have other platforms in the works. The technology behind the app is simple -- it's the design of this game that makes it truly fun and unique.
Wrap-Up
The strength of this game is it's ability to make a high score seem so in reach. As the player moves tiles, he or she might make mistakes or realize that there were better moves. This gives the player hope that they will be able to forgo these mistakes the next time around, and they choose to play it again. Also, the game has very short sessions and is mobile first, so players can play threes during commutes to work or any other short down time that they might have.
The game's incredible design and popularity caused many "almost clones" to be created. Most notably, 2048 because a fast paced web version of the game. 2048 ended up gaining huge popularity among users, and was a huge dissapointment to the designers of Threes. In response to the huge popularity of 2048 and the lack of credit that the Threes team was given for designing the baseline product, they released a really long statement about the extensive design process that they went through to design and create the game.
