Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (or Zelda: The Legend of Link, according to one little Rogue) is a direct sequel to the Legend of Zelda, and takes place as Link approaches the age of 16. He has to awaken the First Princess Zelda who has been sleeping for an undisclosed amount of time by retrieving the Triforce of Courage originally lost when the Hero of Time was defeated many ages ago. His goals: place the six crystals into the six palaces (originally temples), defeat the temple guardians (originally dieties) made by the King of Hyrule, and Ganon's loyal armies who seek to revive their evil master by combining Link's blood with Ganon's ashes. Can Link complete this adventure, claim the Triforce of Courage, awaken the princess, and save Hyrule? Well, it's ArcaneRogue at the helm so... Probably only after dying a lot.

Obligatory warning: I'm by no means amazing at this game. I know a few tricks, and I'd say I have passable skill, but I am far from a speedrunner.

The Zelda game that didn't start as a Zelda game at all! Released on the NES in December of 1988 in the US, and almost 2 full years after the original Famicom release in January of 1987 (yes, before the Legend of Zelda was released in the USA!). Taking inspiration from Dragon Quest (Enix), Dragon Buster (Namco), Romancia/Dragon Slayer Jr. (Falcom), this was definitely NOT a Zelda game during development. Additon of RPG elements like levels, magic, magic points, overworld maps, gave this game a unique feel that also established elements we are familiar with in modern Zelda titles. Akita Nakatsuka (Devilworld, Clu Clu Land, Excitebike, and Ice Climber), a relatively inexperienced composer at the time, developed a very strong soundtrack that was distinct from it's predecessor, and only borrowed a single phrase from the opening title of the first game. Miyamoto deemed this game a failure, and felt limited by the hardware, but as the 8th best seller in the NES library and an influence to many games afterward - perhaps his initial assessment was too harsh. For some really cool information on the game, check out NESComplex's Declassified video on the game:    • SECRETS, CODES, & INTEL | Zelda 2 The...
