While we're working on the full review, we thought we'd share some Xbox Series S and PC gameplay for the 'Souls-like action-RPG Thymesia.
After a somewhat bland tutorial, it quickly establishes itself as a more action-oriented 'Souls-like. There's no stamina bar (instant +1 to the score) but most attacks don't stagger enemies, so they can strike right through your combos - and stagger you - if you're not paying attention. Dashing in for a few strikes, getting out of range, or parrying when possible is key to survival.
There's a cool interconnected wound-energy-plague weapon system that complements your basic sabre attacks. Basic attacks inflict wounds before killing, allowing you to use your plague claw attack to extract energy for summoning plague weapons or, if it's the killing blow, you can steal an enemy weapon for a single-use attack.
The levelling system is simplified 'Souls fare, but there's a ton of added depth like skill trees for each combat style, the ability to modify potion effects, and level up summonable plague weapons.
So far the Xbox Series S version is aiming for 60fps and holding that, though it has a tendency to suddenly slow down camera rotation speed at times, making it difficult to switch focus to an off-screen enemy. On a reasonably high-end gaming PC, it ran well at Ultra settings, targetting 1080/60, using AMD's FSR 2.0 with a few drops that might be resolved in a day-one patch (Intel i5-12600K, AMD Radeon RX590 8GB, 16GB HyperX Predator 3200MHz RAM). Loading times, both into levels or respawning after death, are only a few seconds on both platforms.
