TIE Fighter Toy Comparison & Review (The First Order TIE Fighter toys Star Wars The Force Awakens)
This review will compare the two new TIE Fighter toys that Hasbro released for the movie Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens. There is a standard TIE Fighter and Special Edition Desert Damage TIE Fighter, both of which I go over in this review.
Adjusted Ratings for BOTH TIE Fighter Toys after several days of testing and play:
- Overall Rating - ★★★★☆
- Price: ★★★★ ☆
- Quality: ★★★★★
- Playability: ★★★★☆
Both vehicles are virtually identical other a few small differences. The first difference between the two is the obvious cosmetic sand damage on the wings and hull of the Special Edition Desert Damage TIE Fighter. Also the 3.75 inch TIE Fighter Pilot action figure in the Desert Damaged edition has two vertical red stripes on the front of the helmet, the standard version does not have the red stripes. The only other difference I found was the antenna on the top of the hull opens in opposite directions which is not a big deal. Beyond those 3 differences, they are the exact same toy.
The formal name of the standard vehicle is "First Order Special Forces TIE FIGHTER" as it's labeled on the box. Toys R Us has this named "Star Wars The Force Awakens 3.75-inch Vehicle First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter" on their website. Links below:
There are no sound effects with these toys, and thus no batteries needed. Pro-tip for play, load up this video (https://youtu.be/Na9jwiIcXCM) on your smart phone and place it in your pocket while flying your TIE Fighter around for enhanced fun :)
I only have a few small criticisms of these Tie Fighter toys, one, the cockpit doesn't fit the action figures all that well, you have to extend the arms and pinch the legs in order to fit them in the seats. There are two reverse facing seats in the cockpit that does fit two 3.75" inch action figures, however it's very snug and obviously wasn't designed with the seating of the figures in mind. The cockpit is also a bit challenging to get open. I use my 5 year old to test most of these toys and he couldn't open the cockpit once it was snapped shut. He also didn't have enough strength to fire the green blaster darts on the bottom, but in both cases, not every child will struggle with these features.
Quick note, these are the 3.75" versions of the new First Order TIE Fighters as opposed to the much more expensive 6" The Black Series TIE FIghter Toy. Personally I prefer the 3.75" versions of the toys which more closely resemble the vintage 1978 toy that I remember from my childhood.

I recommend buying all of your Star Wars The Force Awakens toys online directly from The Disney Store, or Toys R Us. Walmart did get at least one exclusive thus far, the blue Resistance X-Wing vehicle, so you'll have to buy that one directly from Walmart.
