The Minish Cap is a great game as far as portable Zeldas go. It combines a terrific blend of old and new, with the old being a familiar cast of characters, music, gameplay (similar to many of the prior portable Zelda titles before it), but also the new items, most of which are quite different from prior games in the series, more music which expands on the already fantastic library that Zelda had, and a companion character who only shows up when you need him to. It also doesn't take long for the story to get going, unlike some of the more recent Zelda titles.

I fondly acknowledge A Link to the Past as my favorite Zelda title, but if I were to recommend another game in the series that's similar, I'd recommend Minish Cap first, which speaks volumes due to the excellence that the portable Zelda titles have all had.
