TNT's MonsterVision Intro Early 90s
During the early 90s, there were two specific shows that really helped turn me on to a LOT of classic sci-fi, fantasy, horror and monster films that I had not yet seen. One of them was Mystery Science Theater 3000, and the other, was TNT's MonsterVision.
Now most people remember MonsterVision for it's 1995-2000 era host, Joe Bob Briggs, and right so, because he himself was a very funny, likeable, and memorable character, who had an obviously passion for movies. But for me, the era of MV that I grew up with and liked best, was the early 90s, before Joe Bob came on. I like Briggs just fine, but when he took over TNT changed the format dramatically, and they started showing slasher films and weird "exploitation" films, things of that nature, versus the older, often black and white classics (and no so classics) from the 40s, 50 and 60s.
MonsterVision, or at least the notion of TNT playing old movie marathons of this nature, started at some indeterminate point around 1991. Now I remember this, vaguely, because reading up about MV on the internet in my adulthood, it said it started in late 1993, but I clearly remembered watching it when I lived at a different house, around 1991. It was definitely called "MonsterVision" and going strong in late 1992, and certainly into 1993. Apparently, by 1994, it was more intermittent, which I also vaguely remember, because I would have to keep track in the TV Guide (remember those?) for when it would be on again.
The last big hurrah, and perhaps my most memorable time with it at all, as around Thanksgiving 1994, I believe, when they had a Godzilla marathon. Me, obviously loving Godzilla as I do, ate that shit up RIGHT away, and could not possibly have been more excited.
