On this day in history, the hopes of a people longing for freedom were crushed, if only for a time. Today in 1849, Austrian troops captured the city of Venice and put an end to the short-lived Republic of San Marco. The Revolutions of 1848 saw freedom-seeking rebels rise up against heavy-handed monarchies all across Europe, and Venice was no exception. The rebels successfully drove out their Austrian overlords and established the Republic of San Marco, but a counterattack by the Austrian Field Marshal Count Radetzky crushed the rebellion and besieged Venice. The city’s defenders held out for several months before succumbing to famine and disease, but the dream of an Italy free from Austrian domination could not be destroyed so easily…
