AKA Battle Arena Toshinden.

This is the Japanese release of Takara's 1 vs. 1 fighter, which otherwise released as a launch title in North America and Western Europe. It was never a great game but it provided a necessary showcase of PlayStation's visual prowess (atleast for 1995), featuring full 3D animated arenas, with crisp looking models and texture work to match.

There are a few differences in this early version of Toh Shin Den, most notably in the character voice-overs (which are all in Japanese), but in music changes (Sofia's stage) and minor quirks in the gameplay too. I prefer this version however because it defaults the special move shortcuts to the shoulder buttons rather than locking them behind a difficulty tier. Battle Arena Toshinden has never been respected for having particularly responsive controls, so those shortcuts are a necessary evil if you're playing against the computer, who will often resort to spamming an attack if you give them the room to do it anyway.

I honestly do not know if I will play any further playthroughs of Toh Shin Den. It is rough to play today, feeling a little RNG thanks to those aforementioned control related issues, slow and plodding gameplay, besides some occasionally awkward hit detection. Toh Shin Den does atleast provide a pleasant showcase of scanlines on PlayStation, so there is that going for it I guess.
