Tokyo Xtreme Racer is the first installment of the Tokyo Xtreme Racer Series; it is known as Shutoko Battle in Japan and Tokyo Highway Challenge in Europe. The game, developed by Genki and published by Genki (Japan), CRAVE+ entertainment (North America), or Ubisoft (Europe), was launched in 1999 for the Sega Dreamcast video game console. Tokyo Xtreme Racer is inspired by the Wangan Midnight series.
The gameplay involves the racer challenging other rivals on Tokyo's Shuto Expressway in order to win money to upgrade his/her car (and eventually buy another car). There is a wide selection of Japanese-branded cars available for purchase, but since the game did not have the licenses to use the cars' actual names, they are referred to by the format "type-chassis number."
