0The game begins with Lara traveling on her first expedition aboard the ship Endurance, intent on finding the lost kingdom of Yamatai. At her suggestion and against Whitman's advice, the expedition heads towards the Dragon's Triangle, off the east coast of Japan. The ship is hit by a storm and is destroyed, leaving the survivors stranded on a deserted island. Lara gets separated from the others and is captured by a wild stranger and imprisoned in a cave. She manages to escape as her captor dies as the cavern collapses due to Lara's actions. As Lara tries to locate the other survivors, she finds evidence that the island is inhabited, such as writing on walls, dead bodies and animal sacrifices. She eventually ends up finding her friend Sam and a man named Mathias, who claims to be a professor who was also shipwrecked on the island. As Sam tells Mathias the legend of Himiko, Lara falls asleep; when she wakes up, Mathias and Sam have disappeared. When Lara regroups with other survivors, Whitman decides to go with Lara to look for the still missing Roth, while the rest of the group (Reyes, Jonah, Alex and Grim) look for Sam and Mathias. As Lara and Whitman explore, they discover that the island's inhabitants worship Himiko, thus confirming that the island is Yamatai. After discovering a shrine built in Himiko's name, they are captured and taken to a camp like other Endurance survivors. When they try to escape, the kidnappers shoot. Lara separates from Whitman and tries to hide, but is found again by a kidnapper and forced to kill him. She fights off the remaining ones and reunites with Roth, saving him from an attack by wolves.[10]
Lara manages to activate a radio tower and call for help, but the plane that answered the call is hit by a strange storm, while Lara hears a mysterious voice in Japanese saying "nobody escapes". Unable to save the pilots, Lara is contacted by Alex and Reyes, who tell her that Sam has been captured by the islanders, a violent cult known as the Solarii Brotherhood. Lara tries to save her, but is stopped by Mathias, leader of the Solarii, who orders her death: she is eventually saved by a samurai-looking Oni figure. Escaping the mortar she is taken away by the Oni, she hears from Sam that Mathias is going to put her through "Ascension", a "fire ritual" to find the next Sun Queen, burning her to death if unsuccessful. Lara follows them to the Solarii stronghold and is helped by Grim. The Solarii hold Grim hostage, but Grim grabs a Solarii and throws himself off an "elevator", giving Lara a chance to escape. With Roth's help, Lara infiltrates the fortress and sees the ritual begin. When the flames are lit, a great wind blows them out, showing that Sam is the next Sun Queen. Lara escapes again and teams up with her friends to form a plan to save Sam and escape the island. Helped by Whitman — who managed to negotiate some freedom with the Solarii — Lara returns to the palace to rescue Sam and Roth commands a helicopter to get them out. Lara is successful, but convinces Sam to escape overland as it becomes clear that another storm is brewing as the helicopter approaches. Lara tries to make the pilot land, and succeeds, causing her to almost die. Roth revives Lara, and is suddenly fatally shot by Mathias, a move intentionally aimed at Lara. As she grieves for Roth, Lara accepts that the storms are unnatural, and that they are somehow connected to the Sun Queen, designed to prevent people from leaving the island. She meets with the other survivors who had already escaped the cult and were preparing a boat to leave the island. Whitman is also with them, claiming he managed to escape, but Lara suspects he is working for the Solarii. Lara and Alex find tools to assemble the boat in the wreckage of the Endurance. Lara looks for Alex by the vessel and finds him but they are attacked by the Solarii and Alex causes an explosion, sacrificing himself so Lara can escape with the tools.[10]
Finding writing from World War II - a Japanese Nazi scientific and military expedition on the island seeking a way to harness storms as a weapon - Lara decides to explore a coastal tomb, where she finds the body of a samurai general who committed seppuku. It is revealed in the message he left that he was the head of the Queen's Royal Guard, the Oni who defend the mortar, and that the Queen's successor took his own life rather than receive the Sun Queen's power, leaving her imprisoned in the Sun. his own body after he dies, with the storms being a reflection of his anger. Lara realizes that the Ascension is not a ceremony to crown a new queen, but a ritual that transfers the original Queen's soul into a new body: Himiko's spirit wants to escape the current body she has, and Mathias plans to offer
