Early development interviews say little about Jason's background, other than the fact that he possesses a strong combat and survival skillset that give him a fighting chance in the desperate circumstances he will constantly encounter during the game's events.[ 21]
More recent interviews have suggested a change to the story in which Jason is now a man out of his natural element, with no special training who is caught up in the chaos of the island while searching for his friends. At the same time, the story will try to invoke what, after a while trapped on the island, will start to have effects on the protagonist, showing another side of Jason's personality, according to producer Dan Hay.[22] The producers have also stated that the game's intended tone will be one of realism and intensity, in an attempt to invoke a visceral and constant sense of danger in the player.[23][24]
