Former bank robber Michael Townley lives in Los Santos, San Andreas, under the alias Michael De Santa after making a secret deal with Federal Investigation Bureau (FIB) agent Dave Norton[note 2] to remain hidden for cause of a botched burglary in Ludendorff, North Yankton, nine years earlier.[28] He meets and befriends criminal Franklin Clinton when he fraudulently attempts to repossess his son Jimmy's car on behalf of a corrupt Armenian dealer.[29][30] Michael shortly afterwards discovers that his wife Amanda is sleeping with the tennis coach, chasing him into a mansion and destroying it in a fit of rage. The owner of the mansion turns out to be the mistress of a Mexican crime lord named Martin Madrazo, who demands compensation under the threat of further violence.[31] Michael returns to his life as a burglar to get money and enlists Franklin as an accomplice.[32] Together they carry out a robbery at a jewelry store in order to pay off Madrazo.[33] Trevor Philips, the only other Ludendorff survivor, finds out about the robbery and realizes it was Michael's work.[34] The two are reunited after Trevor chases Michael to Los Santos.[35]
Michael's increasingly erratic behavior causes his family to abandon him,[36] with his attempts to make it big leading to a conflict with Devin Wenston, a billionaire who develops a grudge against him. Weston vows revenge after his lawyer is killed in an accident for which Michael is blamed.[37] Franklin rescues his friend Lamar Davis from gangster and former friend Harold "Stretch" Joseph, who repeatedly tries to kill Lamar to prove himself to other criminals.[38][39] Trevor's reckless efforts to consolidate his control over various black markets bring him into conflict with the motorcycle gang The Lost,[40] various Latin American street gangs,[41] other methamphetamine dealers,[42] mercenaries financed by the government[43][44] and the triad.[45]
Federal Investigation Bureau (FIB) agents Dave Norton and Steve Haines contact Michael and demand that he perform a series of operations with Franklin and Trevor in order to undermine a rival agency, the International Affairs Agency (IAA).[46] ] They attack an armed convoy carrying cash for the IAA[47] and rob a bank containing the paychecks of all corrupt Los Santos police and public servants.[48] Haines comes under scrutiny for his methods, forcing Michael and Franklin to infiltrate FIB headquarters to erase evidence being used against him. Michael seizes the opportunity to erase the record of his own activities, destroying the leverage Haines had over him.[49] The trio begins planning their most audacious heist yet: robbing the Union Depository's gold reserve.[50]
Michael makes peace with his family and they return to live together in Los Santos.[51] Meanwhile, Trevor learns that Brad Sneider, another of Ludendorff's accomplices, was not arrested as he was led to believe, but was killed in the robbery and buried in a tomb bearing Michael's name.[45] Trevor's feelings of betrayal cause friction within the group and threaten to undermine plans for the Union Depository. Michael and Norton are betrayed by Haines and put into a Mexican standoff between the FIB, IAA and the private security firm Merryweather, but Trevor appears to rescue them and claims that only he has the right to kill Michael. The two maintain their troubled relationship, but agree to carry out the Union Depository heist and part ways afterwards.[52]
The Union Depository heist is successfully carried out, however Franklin is approached by two groups who separately demand that he kill either Michael or Trevor. Haines and Norton argue that Trevor is dangerous, while Weston wants revenge for Michael's betrayal. Franklin is left with three options: kill Michael, kill Trevor, or kill neither and face their enemies together.[53] If he kills one of the two, he breaks relations with the survivor and returns to his old life.[54][55] If you choose the third option, the three face an attack wave from FIB and Merryweather forces, then proceed to kill Haines, Stretch, Wei Cheng of the triads and Weston. Michael and Trevor reconcile and the three stop working together but remain friends.[56]
