296Toontown Online was a massive MMO hit that launched in 2003 and took the Internet by storm. Situated in Toontown, players were able to create their own toon, selecting from a variety of playable species, before hopping into the world and trying to stop the evil cogs from turning the world into a corporate wasteland. The game ultimately closed, but alas, it wasn't forgotten! Enter Toontown Rewritten.
A sort of fan made version, Toontown Rewritten filled the gaps and holes where the original game was missing from. Using the exact same files and assets, this player driven experience took the internet by storm and has garnered over 1.9 million accounts made with thousands flocking every single day just to step into the world once again and fight the evil cogs at every turn. Players can also compete in the same mini games, and roam around Toontown and take over cog buildings, battle in the cog HQ, or even play some mini games with their friends.
The original game ultimately lost its market share to games like Club Penguin, which didn't have the same payment model that Toontown did. A monthly recurring fee on a game targeted at a younger demographic was hard for some parents to stomach. While the original game has been offline for years, it isn't lost just yet. Disney has stated that they still have the files from the original game, including all toons and user accounts, and have looked into porting the game into the mobile market to recapture what they have lost over time.
In any case, this video sheds serious light in a fun way at the marvel that was the tooniverse and what great times it brought a generation of kids in terms of learning all about economics, teamwork, and just overall fun.
