Planet Earth is a weird and wonderful place. There are so many different varied animals out there, and scientists are discovering more and more every day. Even as the human race casts its explorative gaze out into the stars, there are still plenty of mysterious creatures left on Planet Earth. That’s why, in today’s video, we’re going to be checking out the top 10 mysterious creatures captured on camera!

10.Macropinna microstoma
If you want to see some of the weirdest creatures on the planet then there’s no doubt that you have to go underwater. If you go deep enough you’ll come across our first mysterious creature, the Macropinna microstoma. This fish was first discovered in 1939, but it wasn’t until 2004 where people began to take notice of its tubular eyes and… completely see-through head.
Tubular eyes like the Macropinna Microstoma has are great for collecting the maximum of light possible in low light conditions, and when you get down to a certain depth underwater that’s an essential evolutionary trait. The issue with eyes like this is that they would only be able to see in one direction unless you’re a Macropinna Microstoma. Because of the fluid-filled see-through dome on their heads they can actually rotate their eyes within their own skulls to look through the tops of their own heads!
These domes are incredibly fragile and before 2004 every attempt at capturing one led to the dome being utterly destroyed. That’s why, if you look at any early drawings of this mysterious fish, it will be without the see-through dome. Underwater animals adapt to the lack of light at the deepest darkest depths of the ocean in a variety of different ways, but a see-through head has to be one of the strangest!
9. Sea Pig
Officially this creature is known as Scotoplanes, but for some reason, most people call it a Sea Pig. Now, of course, sea pigs aren’t actually pigs at all, they’re a type of sea cucumber… which in itself isn’t the type of cucumber that you’d find in a salad or sandwich. They’re called Sea Pigs because of their appearance, those pink puffy legs and squidgy round pink bodies just make people think of a pig.
Though the colour is just about where the piggie similarities end. Scotoplanes have loads of wiggling legs on the bottom, four tentacle-like appendages on their tops, and a squirming writhing mass of tentacles around their mouths. If they were any bigger than the 4 to 6 inches they are, they would probably be one of the creepiest creatures on the planet!
The creatures are mysterious because they can only be found walking around on the sea-floor, most people will never see them and they are quite hard to study because of that fact. However, they’re actually one of the most common animals in the ocean, and make up more than 95% of the total weight of animals on the deep-sea floor!
8.Pacu
Piranhas are well known for their voracious appetites, and they’re not very mysterious at all. But that’s fine because we’re not looking at the Piranhas, we’re looking at a species that is related to them… the Pacu.
Pacu and Pirannah are so often talked about together because they look basically the same in everything… except for one crucial feature, their teeth! Pirannah have incredibly pointy and sharp teeth, perfect for ripping and tearing their prey apart. Pacu, on the other hand, have teeth that look a whole lot like the teeth of a human!
Pacu uses their strange human teeth to eat aquatic vegetation, as well as fruit and seeds that drop into the water. On the odd occasion, they might take a nibble of a snail or another kind of insect, but it’s the vegetation that they really crave. Pirhannas, by all means, should be the scarier animal… but I can’t help but look at a Pacu’s human teeth and be incredibly creeped out.
7. Sea Pen
Sea Pens have been around for a long time… no, a REALLY long time. They’ve been around since the Cambrian Era, 541 million years ago! That sort of shows in their appearance, which if you think about it does look like something which could have existed in an era before even the dinosaurs.
Sea Pens are made up of a central stalk with a bunch of frilly appendages along the side, which is anchored into the ground by a strange ball at the base. They’re found all over the oceans of the world, and there are actually around 300 different species of separate Sea Pen.
