There's a lot of great core (and auxiliary) mechanics in board games that I like to see. I've talked about several of them throughout the years, and one of my favorites is this - the traitor mechanic. An otherwise cooperative game where one (or more) people are somehow working against the group, in big and/or small ways.
There's a lot of different forms this can take, ranging from being central to the gameplay to something completely optional and almost arbitrary.
