TOR Privacy Enhanced Network Usage Explodes
198In the month of August (and even more recently) TOR (The Onion Router) network usage saw huge gains, with numbers at least doubling in many areas. TOR is a privacy enhancing browser network. It is BY NO MEANS foolproof, but it makes tracking and surveillance harder, at the very least. It works by using a series of encrypted relays dependent on users who join the network. Ostensibly, the more people using the network, the harder it is to track any one browser. According to their metrics portal, TOR usage is way up. Why? Well, probably because as civilians learn more about how we're being surveilled due to NSA programs, the less secure they feel, and the more they want to seek ways to not feel like they're being watched. It's not because of "illegal activity," it's about principle. Kim Horcher and Tim Frisch discuss.
