These days, when someone thinks of "Toryumon", they often will think of the professional wrestling promotion that operated in Japan until 2004 and in Mexico (Toryumon in Japan, Toryumon Mexico in Mexico). Said promotion is owned and operated by Yoshihiro Asai, who is best known under the name Último Dragón. Tōryūmon is a coined word that means "Fighting Dragon Gate". The word is coined after the homonym 登龍門 (Tōryūmon) that literally means climbing up dragon gate and means gateway to success (all of the aforementioned comes from the Wikipedia entry for Toryumon, as it relates to Último Dragón) --- Now, when I was growing up, I actually saw Último on the television and thought his mask and style was so cool. That said, I am slightly disappointed that this game has little to do with Último's promotion. However, surprisingly, the concept and story of the game is actually relatable.

Toryumon has you choose between four characters who all have their different reasons for climbing the area and passing through the "Dragon Gate". Ultimately, they are all seeking success to make their goals/dreams come true. The game is a falling block puzzler in which the goal is to arrange falling pairs of tiles, so that the corners match up and form complete circles. As you do this, the character you chose at the beginning of the game does some kind of martial arts at an opponent whenever you hit a big attack. Doing attacks drops "junk pieces" (if you've played quite a few block puzzlers or Puyo Puyo or what have you, this should be all too familiar). which CAN hinder an opponent, but timing is key --- if someone eliminates normal blocks and any part of that block is touching a junk block, the junk block becomes a normal block, which means under the proper circumstances, they have MORE AMMO to work with and can send even more junk back at you.

Doing chains can be simple enough to learn, but hard to master --- the game has an opening demonstration that shows at least one good technique for creating chains...the "descending ladder" technique. That technique requires one to make horizontal rows that get matched with blocks as the rows above it collapse and begin to fall down. Naturally, however, things can be blocked by opponent actions and their reaction speed, as well as your own reaction speed, so like all good puzzlers, knowing a technique is good, but to truly master the game, it requires a firm understanding on how to improvise on the fly.

Everything said, Toryumon is a solid game that was strangely doomed to obscurity, and I can only surmise/assume that part of the reason the game (seemingly) didn't do well in arcades is due to the game having a very "console" aesthetic for an arcade game in 1994. The visuals and music definitely make me feel like I am playing this on a Sega Genesis, and that is not necessarily an insult, as I enjoy Sega games a great deal. However, to my knowledge, the game was never ported, even now, and while I have no knowledge of such, I can't help but wonder WHY Sega/Jamp didn't make a Genesis port back in 1994...perhaps it is because even as an arcade game, they felt that it was dead on arrival, given when it was released. Also, you had releases like Puyo Puyo and numerous others, prior to this game. Nevertheless, this game is one that I can recommend for at least one playthrough.
