If you asked me twenty years ago if a defunct Nintendo platform would get support for new games, I would've laughed in your face. There are plenty of fan projects and homebrew titles out there for Nintendo's different platforms (mostly NES/FC), but most of them aren't "Gotta Protectors: Amazon's Running Diet". GP:ARD is a 2017 mini-game that is also a free promotional title that can be played in virtually any NES/FC emulator or on original hardware with a repro/custom cart. Even better, it's produced by the legendary Yuzo Koshiro's parent company, Ancient Corp, and it was made to promote the three year anniversary of "Minna de Mamotte Knight: Hime no Tokemeki Rhapsody", which was released for the Nintendo 3DS back in 2014 (and in English in 2016 under the name "Gotta Protectors"). A professional group making an unlicensed homebrew title to promote an endorsed and officially licensed game on another system... it's not something you see everyday.

"Gotta Protectors" itself is a sequel to the awesome 2010 Xbox Live Indie Game, "Protect Me Knight: Mamotte Kishi", which was one of the highest rated XBLIGs and a fun four player (local) cooperative action game with some Tower Defense elements. The only thing really hampering their mass appeal at this point is their platforms; Gotta Protectors and Protect Me Knight were limited to download-only services, and Protect Me Knight isn't even available anymore (with the XBLIG service being shuttered in 2017), so the only hopes of people being able to really enjoy both those games in the future is for them to eventually be ported to PC (unless you wanna go out of your way to find a system that has them installed).

That said, "Amazon's Running Diet" is a simple endless runner where your goal is to stay hydrated and avoid cakes to lose weight. As the titular and thicc character, Amazon, you're ranked based on how far you get and how many cakes you eat -- while you can get far while eating cakes (which will dehydrate you), it will affect her size at the game's end. Just because you don't get as far on some runs doesn't mean you'll wind up chunky if you dehydrate naturally by running out of water but avoiding cakes. She has five sizes and various ranks within these sizes that you can earn and she has a few moves at her disposal you can use to finesse your way around those cakes. There are eight stages that continuously loop and the longer Amazon runs, the faster she gets dehydrated, making each loop slightly harder than the last. How far can you get?

The game has great NES-era graphics and Amazon herself has great animation and scale, and the music is about what you'd expect from Koshiro and his outlet -- it's great. The little bit of music in the game is upbeat and well composed, and the ending segment is kinda funny too (as long as you don't take the game too seriously). While there are several videos for this title, this video is to bring awareness to the latest game in the series; the "Mamotte Syndrome" continues with "Susume!! Mamotte Knight (すすめ!! まもって騎士) " which was recently released in Japan for the Nintendo Switch with a Western release slated for 2020... it's another great upgrade for the series.

This is a video of the game in action that runs for a while before losing on purpose. You can get this game at:
