Total War Needs New Engine: 3 Reasons
In this video, I will explain why the Total War games need a new engine to run future titles. The Total War games are a series of strategy games that combine turn-based and real-time gameplay, set in various historical and fantasy settings1. However, the games have been using the same engine, called Warscape, since 2009 and it is showing its age and limitations. I will discuss three main reasons why a new engine is necessary for the Total War games:
AI: The artificial intelligence of the Total War games is often criticized for being poor and predictable, especially in the campaign map and the siege battles3. A new engine could improve the AI behavior and make the games more challenging and realistic.
Troop Count: The Total War games are known for their epic battles with thousands of units on the screen, but the current engine limits the number and variety of troops that can be displayed4. A new engine could increase the troop count and diversity, and create more immersive and dynamic battles.
Hardware: The current engine does not take full advantage of the modern hardware in PC, such as multi-core processors, graphics cards, DDR5 ram, and SSD. A new engine could optimize the performance and graphics of the Total War games, and make them run smoother and look better.
