This free game on Steam is pretty good! It alternates between vertical and side scrolling shooter with basic enemies and a casual pace. Totally Shmup is the perfect intro into this genre for people that may be put off from the craziness of the typical Cave shooter. It seems longer than it actually is, due to there not being much in the way of enemy variety. But for the low, low price of free, who can complain?
