Here's a trick that vix and others discovered in We Love Katamari, and that works in Katamari Forever and Touch My Katamari too. :) It's based on roughly how big the snowball is when it gets the mammoth.

Grow any way you want, but avoid rolling the snow items and the people on the ski lift, while rolling up most of the other stuff. Then run laps until you're big enough so you can occasionally grab people off the ski lift chairs (without jumping). Next roll 2-3 laps, then grab all the snow items you can and the Royal Nose off the roof, and go 2-3 more laps and get a few more skiers from the lift chairs. Grab the mammoth ... and then see if you're big enough to roll the birch trees. :)

It works pretty frequently, and you don't have to be extremely exact. This time I had gotten a snow item already by accident.

Katamari games have growth formulas where after certain diameters objects don't offer as much diameter (like 990m in The Great Journey), and sometimes there's a sweet spot where you can grow extra big if you roll a huge object or a double grab at that diameter. Something like that also probably causes occasional 346m80cm+ diameters in Make It Big 8, I would guess.
