I'm kind of late to the party.

So, yeah. My first impressions of this game were very positive, the presentation, say music, background, character design, patterns, etc. all came together to make something reaaally great, which I absolutely adored.

Then the translations came out, and oh my. This game's plot is a complete headache. Basically we helped the animals take down an slave uprising, so things could return to function under ´The Law of Nature´, which is the law of the fittest. There's not a good or bad guy here, since beasts don't know what empathy is, and Keiki went a little bit too far. There's room to A LOT of discussion about morality and oppression, but I'm not going to do that now; I'm here to talk about the gameplay.

That said, I have conflicted feelings about this game... on one hand, I adore it, but in the other, I hate it. I have the same opinion about spirits; they're annoying but manageable. Roar Barriers are good to ensure your survival without risking a life or bomb, so the best thing you can do is route when you activate one. I personally try to get them in midbosses, so I can feel safe when getting the Secret Spirits. Oh, yeah, those guys, I love them. To get the Secret Spirits you have to finish a midboss pattern under certain conditions, which use the idea of the pattern and re-contextualize them in order to create a different kind of challenge, except Kutaka's and Mayumi's in Stage 6, those are lame.

Before saying anything, I have to make very clear the fact that I'm trash at this game, and this opinion is influenced by my personal experience, but also others'. I die in stupid situations and it's embarrassing, but at the end I 1cc'd it, so whatever.

Now let's talk about the patterns. This game is one big gimmick; there's a lot of static patterns, more than I would like, and some of them seem kind of... fake difficulty. Let me explain. Yachie's last spell is a very good example; it's a blind killer you can 100% route that can also randomly wall you, and you can't do anything about it. I know I died twice here in this run, but that's because I'm bad at this game. I usually dodge this easily, unless I get walled. Mayumi's nons don't really test your dodging skills; they only test if you stay in a very concrete height from the bottom, kind of a Reisen scenario, but where bottom hugging kills you. Except the last non, Idk what to do with that one. Regarding her spells... they are a joke with Youmu. Idk what was ZUN thinking when he made this boss, but clearly he forgot Youmu existed; Haniwa patterns with Reimu is WAAAAY harder, the difference is surreal. Keiki is a boss where most players agree is a little bit bullshit... at least sometimes. Most of her patterns relies on static micrododging with a little bit of aiming. The third spell is a russian roulette; whether you get a trivial pattern, or a hellish one. The fourth one is a nightmare with Reimu, but it's completely trivialized with Youmu. The fifth one is static, and it's generally pretty easy, but I struggle with it with Youmu for some weird reason. Penultimate is a meme, and the last one... I actually really like it. It's a cool idea to have four static bullet sources that, depending on when you trigger them, you get one pattern or another. It incentivises routing whatever you like.

Btw, the reason I choose Youmu is because 1.- Haniwa patterns with Reimu are a meme and 2.- everybody uses Marisa now apparently, so... yeah. This is a pretty bad run tbh, but that's what you get when you're bad at STGs.
