Touhou 18 Demo: Sakuya 2 Deaths No Bombs/Cards
IMPORTANT TO NOTE:
- Max lives were a result of me trying this on a practice patch. The game gives more than 2 lives anyways so it's not much of an issue but I didn't realise the patch even did this until I uploaded this video
- I accidentally kept that early reset in there lol. I was recording it directly because replay files are kinda glitchy in this game.
Kinda sad that the 2 deaths were exactly on the 2 things I practiced the most for this run but I can always improve it later :3
Touhou 18 demo is out and it's very interesting, to say the least. Compared to the past 2 demos, this one does not toy around. Both bosses and enemies feel quite tanky in this game, and stage sections follow each other up very quickly. Sanae and Marisa are therefore pretty good shots in this game as they're good at killing things fast.
...so of course I had to pick a shot which takes way too much effort to control and even with good control seems to underperform.
I've heard that Reimu is quite bad as well, but I haven't touched her much. I was more interested in Sakuya's weird aim mechanics.
Sakuya in this game acts like PCB SakuyaB but her firepower is about the same as DDC SakuyaB. You'd expect that spreading her knives would obliterate popcorn enemies like Sanae does, but in reality it just tickles all the enemies and kills them after they've already shot way too many bullets. Her focus damage is decent when you aim well, but it's hard to keep it in place as her focus speed isn't always enough for dodges. I guess scarlet mansion's running low on budget and she had to resort to plastic RGB knives and is now collecting money to buy silver ones again.
Furthermore, shots that deal poor damage are stuck in a vicious cycle where they die, lose power, kill less enemies, and then struggle way longer to get back to 4 power (especially since this game gives very little power items). I'm surprised I managed to recover this run so well after the midboss death.
No-cards hampers the potential of the shots even further. I think ZUN isn't really expecting people not to use them lol. Saki's wolf spirit increases your base shot (blue knives) damage for example, but that feels like what should've been the actual damage. Full game No Deaths/Bombs/Cards sounds terrifying to me, given the difficulty of this demo alone.
Anyways, I'm probably gonna focus on DDC again but this was a nice little break and I might experiment more with the demo later.
