Alright, well after that big Touhou flash game that was Project Nite Festival (Not "Nize"!), I think it's time I go back to smaller ones. The game this time is Red Magic!

This game can be found here:

UPDATE: If that link doesn't work, try this one:
http://dagobah.net/flash/redmagic.swf

This game is entirely mouse-controlled. The object of this game is to clear tiles from the field as fast as possible before the incoming pieces stack up to the top of the field and end the game, like with almost any Tetris-style variant.

To clear the tiles, click on a group of touching red tiles to make them vanish. However, the group must contain at least as many tiles as the Magic Border. For example, if the Magic Border is 8, you can't clear a group of only 7 red tiles, but you could clear a group of 8, 10, 20, or 50 red tiles.

Of course, you're not always going to have big groups of red tiles just handed to you, but if you click on a white tile, each tile that's adjacent to it in the four cardinal directions (up, down, left, and right), will switch from white to red, or from red to white (however, the white tile that you actually clicked on won't change). Strategic clicking of white tiles can give you very large groups of red tiles, which you can then clear away.

Now, as the game goes on, additional rows of tiles will fall into the field. They will fall after a certain amount of time, or you can just click on the row waiting to drop to make it fall immediately if you're impatient. If the rows stack up to the top of the field, you don't actually lose instantly. You'll have a short period of time (measured by the Border of Life at the top of the screen) to quickly make a match somewhere to stay alive. If the Border of Life drains completely when the tiles are touching the top of the field, then the game is over. If the Border of Life has started draining, and then matches are made to get out of danger, it'll stop draining, but it won't instantly recover back to full. However, every match made will recover the Border of Life a bit until it hits its maximum.

As you clear tiles, the game level will increase, which will gradually reduce the amount of time it takes for the next row of tiles to fall, and at certain levels, increase the Magic Border, which means you'll have to find larger groups of red tiles to make matches.

Of course, if you want a high score, you don't want to just settle for the minimum size groupings of red tiles. Large combos score at a way higher rate than small combos (it's based on the square of the number of red tiles cleared at once), so you'll probably want to try to create huge groups (possibly almost the entire screen) to clear at once if possible, perhaps even letting the stack hit the top briefly and risking your Border of Life just to get a few more tiles into your combo.

Also, you can choose to start on one of four difficulty levels, which start the game at different levels, and so affect the Magic Border and the time it takes for the next row to drop. Starting values for each difficulty:

Easy: Level 1, Row drop time: 10 seconds, Magic Border: 4.
Normal: Level 21, Row drop time: 8 seconds, Magic Border: 8.
Hard: Level 51, Row drop time: 4 seconds, Magic Border: 14.
Lunatic: Level 81, Row drop time: 2.5 seconds, Magic Border: 20.
(Border of Life stays the same on all levels. Its starting and maximum values are always 5 seconds.)

Note that if you start playing on a higher difficulty level, your score increases more rapidly than if you started on a low level and worked your way up. So, a short game started on Lunatic may score higher than a long game started on Easy. However, the game does keep track of your highest scores for each starting difficulty level. (There doesn't appear to be a rankings board, however.)

Points gained per match (R is the number of red tiles cleared at once):
Easy: 5*R^2, Normal: 10*R^2, Hard: 20*R^2, Lunatic: 40*R^2.

One more thing: This game is playable on the Wii's internet browser, which is nice!

I plan to continue making videos of some other Touhou flash games periodically for a while. If anyone has any suggestions for a Touhou flash game for me to play, I'll consider it, but there are no guarantees. It will kind of depend on whether I like the game enough or not.

Feel free to comment, but just know that I dislike profanity. Any comments containing F-bombs and/or S-bombs will be Scarlet Meistered! (In other words, they'll be deleted.)
